磁化していないコアをオン、書き込み線に電流を流して磁化させたコアをオフとして１ビット(bit)を表す。
読み込みはコアに電流を流し、感応電流によってオン・オフを知るが、電流を流すことによってコアの内容は破壊されてしまう(破壊読出し)。そのため読み出した後は再書き込みをしなければならない(リフレッシュ)。
コンピュータの主記憶として盛んに用いられたが、ＩＣメモリーの発達とともに使われなくなった。
